For most of publishing history, audiobooks were a luxury reserved for authors with big budgets or big backlists. Traditional narration runs around $5,000 and eats roughly 40 hours in the recording booth. That math simply doesn’t work for most of us — which is why fewer than 5% of books ever become audiobooks in the first place.
That’s changing fast, and ElevenLabs is leading the shift.
The platform now offers a dedicated audiobook production suite called Projects, paired with a newer voice model (v3) capable of real emotional performance — not the flat, robotic narration AI voices used to be known for. The result: authors can produce a studio-quality audiobook for under $100, a fraction of what traditional narration costs.
This isn’t theoretical. Romance author Leeanna Morgan has produced more than 20 audiobooks through ElevenLabs, saving an estimated $85,000 she would have spent on professional narrators. Urban fantasy author Joseph Nassise has released 16 titles this way — including two translated into Spanish using the platform’s dubbing tools.
What it costs
ElevenLabs prices in tiers:
• Starter — $6/month, covers under 30 minutes of audio, includes commercial rights
• Creator — $22/month ($11 first month), roughly 121 minutes of audio, one Professional Voice Cloning slot, and access to Projects
• Pro — $99/month, for higher-volume producers who need lower per-minute overage rates
One thing worth knowing before you commit: pricing is character-based, not book-based. A full novel can burn through an entire month’s Pro-tier allowance on its own, which means the model doesn’t always scale cleanly if you’re trying to convert a full backlist rather than one title at a time.
Where the finished audiobook can go
Distribution used to be the real bottleneck for AI-narrated audio — many platforms simply wouldn’t carry it. That’s opening up. A 2025 partnership between ElevenLabs and Findaway Voices means ElevenLabs-narrated audiobooks can now distribute through Spotify’s network without requiring ACX exclusivity. As of May 2026, Spotify has gone further, launching a beta ElevenLabs-powered creation tool built directly into Spotify for Authors.
Beyond Spotify, ElevenLabs titles can also reach Kobo Writing Life, YouTube, ElevenReader, and an author’s own storefront through Shopify and Bookfunnel.
A new way to earn from listens
ElevenLabs has also rolled out a payout program through its own ElevenReader app: authors earn roughly $1.10 when a listener engages with their audiobook for 11 minutes or more. During testing, the average listener stuck around for about 19 minutes. Right now this is limited to U.S. authors and English-language titles, but ElevenLabs has said it plans to expand payouts across the 32 languages the platform already supports for audio.
The bigger picture
Bestselling thriller author and indie publishing voice Joanna Penn has been experimenting with AI narration for years, and she’s predicted 2026 as the year it goes fully mainstream — not just for indies, but for traditional publishers too. MacMillan already sells AI-narrated audiobooks directly, and Penguin Random House Audio has used authorized voice replicas for select projects.
For independent authors, though, the real story isn’t what the Big Five are doing. It’s that a tool that used to cost thousands of dollars and weeks of studio time now costs less than a nice dinner out — and it’s getting easier to find listeners once the book is done.
