Summer's winding down, which means it's the perfect window to stock the TBR pile before October reading lists take over. This August has quietly delivered one of the stronger indie horror lineups of the year, and a few of these are worth grabbing now while pre-orders are still open.

A Bitter Butcher Revival

Kelsey Christine McConnell's new release from Evil Twin Press (out August 18) sends a disabled horror fan to a rental cabin in rural Montana, only for the anniversary of a 25-year-old massacre to reawaken. It's a slasher built on legacy dread, the kind where the past never really stayed buried. If you love a killer with mythology behind them, this one's going straight to the top of the list.

Desert Heat, Desert Hunger

Also from Evil Twin, A.P. Thayer's desert-set novel follows a friend group's getaway to the town of Superstition, where something ancient feeds on more than fear. This one leans into desire as a horror mechanic rather than an afterthought, which makes it a natural read for anyone drawn to the darker, hungrier corners of paranormal romance.

Tapeworm

Described as a body-horror vampire novel for fans of Stephen Graham Jones, V. Castro, and Rachel Harrison, Tapeworm asks how far someone will go to stop repressing what they actually want. Vampire fiction has been leaning harder into body horror and repression themes lately, and this is shaping up to be one of the titles people are talking about this fall.

Nest of Tongues

A Filipino vampire story releasing August 11, expanding the genre's reach well beyond the usual Gothic-Europe backdrop. Always worth supporting when vampire fiction pulls from folklore outside the well-worn well.

Back for Blood: Never Whistle at Night, Part II

The sequel to an Indigenous horror anthology whose first volume made it into the Obama Presidential Library's collection. Editors Shane Hawk and Theodore C. Van Alst return with a follow-up that's already generating buzz heading into fall.

Why Read Ahead of the Season

Spooky season TBRs fill up fast, and the best indie horror tends to sell out its early print runs or lose pre-order momentum before the crowd notices. Getting a head start means you're reading these while the ink's still fresh, not scrambling in October when every list on the internet is recommending the same five books.
